Despite the courage and drive to serve and help others regardless of the uncertainty of being rewarded, each organization perpetrates through its advocacies, the reality is that not all organizations are meant for everyone. Finding the right organization comes with a lot of work and dedication.
What can you offer the organization?
Prior to joining any organization, it is crucial for one to be aware of his/her skills and capabilities. Being able to assess yourself and where you stand is something that can’t just help an individual in joining an organization, but can also help an individual improve herself and her performance. The best way to be able to assess yourself is by determining your own set of strengths and weaknesses. Through such a process, one would be able to identify which factors can be considered as his/her skills and capabilities–and as well as assess which area one must focus on for improvements.
Who do you want to help and give service to?
In a third-world country where corruption, poverty, and crime are rampant, there are a large number of communities and sectors that are in need of assistance. However, as disappointing as this may sound, we cannot help and save everyone. We can only save a certain number of communities in our hands. This is why in joining an organization, one must be able to conduct the necessary research or background before participating in an organization. One must be first aware of the difficulties each community experiences.
Self-assessment and awareness can heavily contribute to identifying what one can bring and contribute to an organization. However, it is also crucial for one to know who he/she aims to help and give service to in general. Do you wish to advocate for the children? Do you wish to help animals? Do you wish to cater and give service to indigenous people? Do you wish to empower young women? Each organization has its own set of advocacies that they adhere to, and as a potential member, it is crucial for one to have self-awareness of who he/she wishes to give service. Because whatever organization you may choose and fall into, you are a part of it because you wish to serve the people and not yourself.
How do you know if it’s the right or wrong organization for you?
Joining an organization seems easy and simple through the minimum requirements provided by the organization. It creates an impression of how joining an organization is a trouble-free and unchallenging process for the majority. And in reality, anyone can join any organization, anytime and anywhere. However, not everyone can recognize if they are in the right organization or not. Being part of an organization comes with commitment and dedication. It is an act of volunteerism that provides people an opportunity to serve a certain community without expecting anything in return.
The load of work in an organization can be as heavy as any job. It takes up a lot of time, effort, and hard work to be able to fulfill one’s duties and responsibilities. This is why it is crucial for one to find the right organization fit for him/her. Organizations, despite the heavy load, should be fulfilling. It should contribute a sense of gratification to an individual. It shouldn't be in any way a source of demotivation or burden. One must be self-aware that whatever he/she is exerting for the organization, it is for the people, for the community, and not for one’s own selfish desires.
Where can you find the right organization and when is the best time to join an organization?
There is no specific and/or best time to join an organization. It is something that can only be distinguished through instinct and willingness to serve. Being part of an organization comes with a sincere intention to serve a certain community without expecting anything in return. There are a large number of organizations in the Philippines, however, potential volunteers struggle in searching for organizations given that there has been no official directory for NGOs led by the youth. This is why on this website, well-known NGOs in the Philippines are able to provide volunteers the opportunity and option in choosing the best organization for them.
